Updated Statement 2/16/2024

Due to the continued spread of misinformation following recent social media posts, we have decided to put out another statement on behalf of the District. We again want to reassure our parents and community that the matter being handled by law enforcement does NOT involve a teacher, employee, student-teacher, or any person with access to campus during school hours. It is our understanding that the individual involved was obtaining observation hours for a college sports management course by attending home basketball games under the direct supervision of the Head Coach. The District ran a check on the individual, which instantly screens each individual’s government-issued ID card against the sex offender registries in all 50 states as well as an unlimited number of custom databases, which did not reveal any concerns. As soon as the District learned of a potential concern involving this individual, access to observe basketball games was terminated and the matter was turned over to law enforcement. The District wants to do its best to keep the community informed, but we will always prioritize the privacy of our students as to any school-related matters.

Lamar School District Statement

The Lamar School District is aware of the posts on social media. We are not able to comment on any particulars about the posts. We do want to reassure our parents and community that the information is incorrect in regards to there being any involvement with a Lamar teacher or employee. We are aware that a matter is being handled by the police department. The District's priority will continue to be the safety of our students.

Lamar Public Schools Student Privacy Statement

While students who suffer due to prohibited conduct have the right to file Title IX complaints, students who have been accused also deserve to have their rights protected. All parties are entitled to the right to privacy and confidentiality as permitted by law. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. However, FERPA prevents schools from disclosing students’ records and personal information. Further, under FERPA, schools must take steps to protect privacy in these sexual misconduct investigation situations that, in some cases, reach beyond mere redaction of names and other directly-protected information to exclude facts that would otherwise identify students. Information and records that are considered part of a student’s education record are to be protected from disclosure. Therefore, in light of the privacy concerns tied to sexual misconduct investigations, the school cannot disclose certain confidential or private information from education records.
